Museum of Ittingen

The Ittingen Museum provides a lively insight into the history of the buildings and their inhabitants. In the austere monks' cells, you can experience how the Carthusians sought God's closeness in silence and solitude.

The richly furnished dining room and the magnificent rococo church still present themselves today as if monks still lived and prayed in Ittingen. At the same time, the billiard table in the chapter house tells of the dissolution of the monastery in 1848 and the subsequent use of the place as the seat of power of a landowning family. The themes and stories about the monastery and the Carthusian order are made accessible to a wide audience by means of an audio guide, radio plays for children and publications.

The outside space is also characterised by monastic life, as visitors can experience on four themed paths through the gardens of the Charterhouse. If you wander through the grounds with your eyes open, you will repeatedly come across fragments of historical garden design amidst the flowering splendour of today's planting.
