Getting here and onward journey

Thurgau is easy to get to by car or public transport. From Zurich, you can reach Frauenfeld, the cantonal capital, in less than 40 minutes. From southern Germany, the best option is to hop onto a passenger boat. You can even bring your car across the lake – the car ferry runs hourly between Friedrichshafen and Romanshorn. Why not come to Thurgau for a day trip or holiday?

The rail network covers Thurgau via the lake route between Rorschach and Schaffhausen, or the fast trains from Zurich - Winterthur, Stuttgart - Singen - Konstanz or Bregenz / Feldkirch - St. Margrethen - Rorschach.

By car, you can reach Thurgau from Switzerland via the A1 and A7 motorways, from Germany via Konstanz or Friedrichshafen (car ferry); from Austria you can travel via Feldkirch or Bregenz.

The nearest airports are Zurich (ZRH), Friedrichshafen (FDH) and Altenrhein (ACH).

The Lake Constance ferry between Romanshorn and Friedrichshafen makes daily crossings, reducing the travel time from the German shores of Lake Constance.

By train

The Thurbo regional railway operator connects eastern Switzerland with a dense railway network, taking you to every corner of Thurgau. There are various ticketing options available for public transport, e.g.:

  • The Ostwind Tageskarte (day pass) lets you travel by rail and bus in selected zones in Thurgau, St Gallen, Appenzell and Glarus.
  • The Bodensee Ticket is valid around Lake Constance in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It allows you to take the train, the bus and the two ferries: Romanshorn-Friedrichshafen and Konstanz-Meersburg.
  • With Oskar, the Guest Card of Eastern Switzerland, you have free access to all public transport in six cantons, including mountain railways and passenger boats.

By boat

Welcome on board! You really can't miss out on a boat trip while in Thurgau, and the Lake Constance and Rhein boat operators provide you with the perfect opportunity to get a fantastic look at Thurgau from the water.
