St. Leonhard's Chapel

St. Leonhard's Chapel
St. Leonard's Chapel in Landschlacht is one of the oldest chapels in the Lake Constance region. It is famous for its murals, which date back to different eras.
St. Leonhard's Chapel is said to have been built in place of an even older chapel in the 10th or 11th century. Since then, it has been painted with frescoes from various eras. Although some of the frescoes have been destroyed by subsequently broken out windows, St. Leonard's Chapel is considered a gem of Gothic architecture in the Lake Constance region. The western half of the rather sparse chapel is Romanesque and built from rough fieldstones. The other half of the chapel is Gothic and was added at the end of the 14th century.
